Description:

In the early 1920’s Bates met and married Winifred Sandford. This is her copy dedicated to her by Bates with the inscription, “Remembrance of high hills”. A reference to their walks in the Pyrenees.

They spent a lot of time travelling and working in France and Spain before the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. As members of the Communist Party they took up active roles with the Popular Front in Barcelona during the Civil War.

As a result of this book, short stories about the oppressed working classes living under ruthless Catholicism in Spain and organising the International Brigades, Bates was invited to America to raise funds for the Republican cause.

Winifred worked for PSUC( Partit Socialista Unificat de Catalunya) in Barcelona as a writer and Journalist till 1938. She went with Bates to live in Mexico. They divorced shortly afterwards and she returned to the UK to teach. Bates moved to America and became a lecturer.
