Description

The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. B. Traven.

Chatto and Windus. 1934.

First Edition in English.

Original dark orange cloth, gilt lettering on spine. Minimum foxing on opening leaves. Dust jacket restored down line of spine and front of jacket.

A near fine copy in a clamshell box.

Traven’s third and best known work was originally published in his native German in 1927. One of the finest adventure novels written, it is filled with danger, cruelty, physical and emotional suffering: a psychological study of man’s greed, in this case, gold.

In 1948, John Houston made it into an American classic of the cinema, starring Humphrey Bogart. It won 3 Oscars.

Although a recluse living in Mexico for most of his life, Traven inadvertently increased the mystery of his origins and as a result improved the sales of his books, especially this one.
